
Pen Name: Abid Sherwani – Urdu and Persian poet, writer and commentator
Dr. Abid Sherwani’s full name is Abid Javed Khan Sherwani, son of Javed Ahmad Khan Sherwani, while his pen name is Abid Sherwani. He was born on 1 September 1959 in Tehsil Bhalwal, District Sargodha. He received his early education from Wazirabad and completed his graduation (B.A. with Political Science, Islamiat, and Economics) from Zamindara Degree College, Gujrat.
His ancestors originally belonged to Afghanistan and migrated to the Indian subcontinent with the forces of Shahab-ud-Din Ghori, later settling in District Karnal. During the Taqseem-e-Hind, his parents migrated to Pakistan. His grandfather, Muhammad Yousaf Khan Sherwani, settled in Tehsil Wazirabad, District Gujranwala. His father served in the British Army, participated in World War II, and later retired from military service in Pakistan.
After completing his graduation, Abid Sherwani moved to Karachi in 1978, where he has resided permanently ever since. Initially, he worked in the property buying and selling business. In May 1981, he joined the Audit Department as a Senior Auditor. After passing departmental examinations, he was promoted to Assistant Audit Officer in 1988 and later to Audit Officer in 1997. He retired from government service in 2019 as an Assistant Director, while continuing his property business on a part-time basis.



During his service, he obtained a Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine (2003–2005) and acquired its license in 2022 after retirement. He completed his LL.B. (2013–2016) and obtained his license in 2021. He is currently practicing as an Advocate High Court at the Sindh High Court, Karachi. In 2021, he established a legal firm under the name Abid & Iftikhar Solicitors, located at Asad Chambers, near Sindh High Court, Saddar, Karachi.
In 2018, he completed a formal Persian language course from Khana-e-Farhang-e-Iran, Karachi, and in 2024, he undertook studies in Arabic (Sarf-o-Nahw).
His association with adab and shayari began at an early age. During his student years, he developed a deep interest in Allama Iqbal and Mirza Ghalib, and the Umrani Afkaar of Iqbal left a lasting intellectual impact on him. His inclination toward Qurani fikr was further strengthened through the works of Dr. Israr Ahmed. Alongside this focused interest, he maintains a lifelong habit of extensive reading across various disciplines.
In April 2017, he founded “Allama Iqbal Studio” at his residence, from where hundreds of videos explaining Urdu and Farsi Kalam-e-Iqbal were produced and published on YouTube and Facebook. Later, the ground floor of his house was introduced as “Danashgah-e-Iqbal”, where regular adabi, ilmi, and taleemi nashistain are organized. To date, six biannual literary gatherings have been successfully conducted.

Dr. Abid Sherwani was married in 1989. He is the father of one daughter and two sons. His daughter is congenitally MR, while both sons are engaged in their own businesses.
